True Impact Rating 2014: Top Five Point Guards

Jeremiah Short, Feature Writer

The point guard position is one of the more solid groups in the 2014 Draft. Most fit the bigger lead guard profile that is en vogue in today’s NBA. My True Impacting Rating 2014 reflects the overall depth of the position.

1. Marcus Smart (6’3, 226)

College/International Team: Oklahoma State
Primary Position: Point Guard
Secondary Position: Shooting Guard
2013-2014 Stats: 18.0 ppg., 5.9 rpg., 4.8 apg., 2.9 spg.

Talent: 8
Skill: 8
Versatility: 9
Length: 9
Offensive Impact: 8.5
Defensive Impact: 8
Production: 9
Basketball I.Q.: 8
NBA Ready: 8.5
Potential: 9.5
It Factor: Yes

True Impact Rating (T.I.R.): 94.5
Overall Ranking: 1

Strengths
+ Explosive
+ Length
+ Offensive and Defensive Versatility

Weaknesses
– Conditioning
– Emotional Maturity

Prospect Breakdown: Smart is one of two “It Factor” prospects in the 2014 NBA Draft. He’s an explosive, versatile point guard with an ability to play both guard positions. His well-documented shoving incident has given some teams pause. But the sophomore’s guard winner’s intangibles such trump any character concerns. If he gets past Orlando at four, he likely slips out the top 5 and will become a steal for a team selecting in the middle of the lottery.

Projected Draft Spot: Top 10
Best Value: 1-5
Best Team Fits: Lakers, Bucks, Magic, Celtics

True Impact Rating (T.I.R.): 81.5
Overall Ranking: 7

Strengths
+ Efficient
+ Great Vision
+ True Point Guard

Weaknesses
- Good, not Great Athlete
- Finishing

Prospect Breakdown: Ennis is one of the more underrated prospects in the NBA Draft. He’s not the most explosive athlete. But he is highly efficient and excels in pick-n-roll situations. With his length, he could become a good to great defender at the NBA level, as well. He likely slips out the lottery, though. Five years from now, teams will regret passing him up…book it.

Projected Draft Spot: Top 20
Best Value: Late Lottery
Best Team Fits: Magic, Bucks, Lakers

True Impact Rating (T.I.R.): 81.5
Overall Ranking: 7

Strengths
+ Versatility
+Length
+ Dogg Mentality

Weaknesses
- Upside
- Character Concerns

Prospect Breakdown: Kane is one the older prospects in the draft at 25-years old. But he’s one of the most talented. It makes me wonder what happen with his career. He has the skill set of a ready-made pro. Shooting. Playmaking ability. And great length. His age may lead to him being undrafted. But I wouldn’t be shocked to see him get picked as an undrafted free agent and make an impact as a rookie.

Projected Draft Spot: Second Round to Undrafted
Best Value: Middle First Round
Best Team Fits: Dallas, Hawks, Heat

4. Devon Saddler (6'1, 213)

College/International Team: Delaware
Primary Position: Point Guard
Secondary Position: Shooting Guard
2013-2014 Stats: 19.7 ppg., 4.3 rpg., 3.6 apg., 36.7 3pp.

True Impact Rating (T.I.R.): 78
Overall Ranking: 16

Strengths
+ Explosive
+ Skilled Scorer
+ Powerfully Built

Weaknesses
- Score-First
- Level of Competition

Prospect Breakdown: Saddler is another underrated 2014 prospect. He played at the small school level (Delaware). But he’s a big-time scorer who’s a tremendous talent. The D-League is probably in his future. But he’s an NBA talent who will contribute to a team in the next two or three years in a major way.

Projected Draft Spot: Undrafted
Best Value: Late First Round
Best Team Fits: Houston, Orlando, Miami

2013-2014 Stats:19.3 ppg., 6.3 rpg., 5.8 apg.

Talent: 7.5

True Impact Rating (T.I.R.): 76.5
Overall Ranking: 27

Strengths
+ Length
+ Versatility
+ Potential Elite Defender

Weaknesses
- Perimeter Jumper
- Strength

Prospect Breakdown: Payton is one of those big lead guards that I mentioned in my initial breakdown of the group. He has blazing speed from end to end and would flourish in an up-tempo system. He’s an ideal fit for a team looking for a combo guard off the bench who could develop into a very good starting point guard.

Projected Draft Spot: Late First Round
Best Value: Late First Round
Best Team Fits: Houston, Miami, Milwaukee

Payton Highlights

Overrated: Russ Smith(68)
