The New York Jets signed running back Chris Ivory to a three-year extension, signed free agent guard Stephen Peterman and agreed to terms with 15 undrafted free agents.

Ivory was acquired by the Jets in a trade with New Orleans Saints for their fourth round selection (106th-overall) Friday. He signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent three seasons ago and the Tiffin University grad played in 24 games.

Ivory is a physical, powerful runner with breakaway speed, but health has been a concern during his brief NFL career. The 6-0, 22-pound ball carrier recorded 1,307 yards (5.1 per carry) off 256 carries with eight touchdowns for his career. In 2012, Ivory appeared in six games (two starts) and rushed 40 times for 217 yards (5.4 avg.) and two touchdowns.

Ivory definitely will bring another punch to the Jets’ backfield.

“We all like and appreciate the way that Chris plays the game,”said Jets’ offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. “He plays it in a tough, physical manner. That always helps. You have a one, two and even three punch thing going on in the backfield. That’s just outstanding because it keeps you fresh. You have a downhill physical guy and then you’ve got some dynamic ability out there. It mixes very well.”

Peterman was originally selected by the Dallas Cowboy as a third round selection in the 2004 NFL Draft. The 6-4, 323-pound offensive lineman is entering his ninth season. However, Peterman played the last seven seasons with the Detroit Lions and appeared in 90 career games (86 starts).

In 2012, Peterman started all 16 games and protected quarterback Matt Stafford, who finished second in the NFL with 4,967 passing yards.
