San Diego Chargers: Turner Welcomes Storied Teams, Great For Fans

Two of the NFL’s most-storied franchises, in the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys, will travel to San Diego to take on the Chargers to open the 2012 preseason with back-to-back contests at Qualcomm Stadium.  And Chargers’ head coach Norv Turner believes that the team’s fans are appreciative of the NFL’s scheduling of two such powerful franchises to come to town.

“From a fan’s perspective, you couldn’t ask for a better start than to face the Packers and the Cowboys right out of the gate,” said Head Coach Norv Turner, according to the team’s press release. “All four preseason opponents will be a great test for our players and coaches in preparation for the 2012 season.”

The Chargers’ preseason opener for Week 1 against the Packers will be nationally-televised on ESPN on Thursday night, Aug. 9 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. When the Chargers and Packers met in Week 9 of the 2011 regular season, they combined to score 83 points and the contest was considered as one of the most entertaining games of the year. This time, quarterbacks Philip Rivers and Aaron Rodgers will not put on a show since it is just the preseason.

Week 2, the Chargers will host the Cowboys with a healthy quarterback in Tony Romo. San Diego and Dallas met last season for the preseason, which was a nationally-televised event at Cowboys Stadium.  The last time the Cowboys journeyed to San Diego was in 2008.

The Chargers will conclude the preseason with back-to-back road games. The Minnesota Vikings will host the Chargers for Week 3, and these two teams’ last dance with each other for the preseason was in 2005.

To close out exhibition play, the Chargers will take a trip up the road to San Francisco to face their annual preseason opponent in the 49ers, which is set for Thursday, Aug. 30.  This time, the Chargers will face an angry 49ers’ team who fell short of reaching the Super Bowl last season.  However, the Chargers will welcome the matchup to display their offensive firepower against the NFC West champions.
